Clear Staff Learn The Grisly Past Of Their Derby Office
In early October, Clear's staff were invited by Vernon Gate Management to learn the dark history surrounding our Derby office. Staff were treated to a guided tour around the Vernon Gate area and visit to the Old Derby Gaol with famous historian Richard Felix.
Clear's Derby office is built on the grounds of the former County Gaol prison. Opened in 1827, the name changed to HM Prison Derby in 1886. And for more than 100 years, was home to generations of thieves, fraudsters and murderers. Crowds flocked from outlying villages; some even came by train to watch the victims being brought from the prison on to the scaffold for their execution. The more notorious the criminal, the bigger the crowd. At first executions took place in the middle of the road at the far end of Friar Gate and then in front of the Old County Gaol.
All that remains today of the former prison are its façade; hiding the offices within.
Please see the link below to spot some of Clear's staff enjoying getting spooked over Vernon Gate's dark and gruesome history.
