CIWEM and ICE win for Hannah Howe
Posted 8th June 2016
On behalf of DCWW, RPS participated in the joint CIWEM and ICE “Learning to Live with Flooding in Wales Conference 2016” this week in Cardiff. Rhona Kirkham, Adam Norris and Hannah Howe from RPS’s Sustainable Drainage Plan (SDP) team and Andrew Jackson from RPS Belfast attended the conference, which focused on flooding policy, catchment management and modelling.
The conference speakers included representatives from Welsh Government, Natural Resources Wales, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, Welsh Local Government Association, community associations, academia and consultants.
Alongside the conference, the “Young Professionals Poster Presentation Competition” saw six young professionals present posters about their involvement with flooding projects. Hannah Howe from RPS won the prize for the poster competition for her poster “A Holistic Catchment Planning Approach to Reduce Flood Risk in Haverfordwest”, which explored the tactical and strategic planning in progress to address flooding and other risks in the Merlins Bridge SDP catchment. Hannah received a trophy and handshakes from David Rowlands, Chair of ICE Wales, and Dr Jean Venables, Past President of ICE.
“I am very proud to represent RPS and DCWW at this national conference, and it is an honour to be awarded this prize. I hope this award will promote awareness of the work of SDPs, and the benefits they bring for developing a sustainable and holistic approach to managing flood risk.” - Hannah Howe
RPS are very proud of Hannah and congratulate her on winning the poster competition.
WIA win for STW Sewer Rehabilitation Team
Posted 19th May 2016
Congratulations to the Severn Trent Water Sewer Rehabilitation Team for winning the Water Industry Award 2016 for Data Project of the Year.
Calum Duncan (RPS) with Stuart Clarke (Atkins) and Daniel Skivington (STW) required a way to consistently scope rehabilitation works across catchments. To do this they implemented the ‘pipe rehabilitation tracker’. The aim of this tracker is to provide a holistic view to the risk posed to STW by its gravity sewers.
The tool is built in Excel and it provides a way of consistently comparing pipes across a catchment in terms of the risk to STW. This is based on the likelihood and consequence of a specific sewer collapse and considers engineering situation, incident history and its current structural condition, among other project specific variables. Data is gathered from many parts of STW and other external stakeholders including asset data, CCTV data, operational data, RPS’ PondSim outputs and environmental data.
Congratulations again to Calum, Stuart and Daniel on their achievement.

Clear Develop Leading Edge Urban Drainage Qualification to support Staff Development
Posted 30th April 2015
Staff development is a cornerstone for the growth of a successful consultancy business and a newly accredited Post Graduate Certificate in Urban Drainage will provide RPS Clear staff with a big step towards attaining professional membership with CIWEM.
The urban drainage consultancy business is highly competitive, with the need to develop existing staff and provide a unique offering to recruit top graduates in the field being essential to ensure continuing growth. With this in mind, the RPS Clear team has been working with The University of Derby for the past 12 months on the creation of a unique technical development programme within the urban drainage sector to enhance the existing Clear Technical Development Programme.
The Post Graduate Certificate in Managing Urban Drainage is a work based learning programme accredited at Level 7 on the National Qualifications Framework, which will challenge participants to broaden their understanding of the principles of urban drainage and risk based catchment management, whilst developing their technical skills and implementing their learning in the workplace.
The content and outputs of the course have also been aligned to the CIWEM (Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) Mandatory Competences, with the final assessment replicating a formal Professional Review. Staff successfully completing the course will have developed sufficient knowledge and experience to achieve the MCIWEM qualification and will have taken a big step towards Chartered status with the institution (C.WEM).
Technical Sector Lead and Course Director James Hale said “There is nothing else like this within the Industry. It will provide our staff with the opportunity for enhanced work based learning, a formal qualification and a stepping stone towards professional membership with CIWEM. It should also give us a unique selling point within the graduate recruitment market within the coming years.”
The course was approved by the University of Derby Validation Panel on the 24th April 2015, with the panel commending the team’s ‘approach to CPD and academic curiosity’ and the development of a ‘technically challenging and advanced multi-disciplinary programme’.
The first cohort of RPS Clear participants will formally start the course on the 1st June 2015, registering as students with the University of Derby on this date. In future years this qualification will be opened up to staff in RPS (Clear’s parent company) and also to our Client organisations within the water sector.
RPS Clear Director, David De Rosa, said “Following significant investment in developing the course content, this is a major achievement and signals our commitment to structured continuing professional development for staff”.
Please contact James Hale for further information.

Clear registers Integrated Management System, and all offices with ISO 9001:2008
Posted 10th December 2013
Clear Environmental Consultants Limited are pleased to confirm that after a series of external audits, we've been approved for registration with the ISO:9001 Quality Assurance accreditation with ISOQAR.
Operations Director Steve Hogg has said, "Thanks for everyone’s help in embedding the new IMS system so far, especially to those of you who were involved directly with the auditors across the three offices.
We are now focusing on the ISO:14001 Environmental and OHSAS:18001 Health and Safety standards, so lots more to do, but the comments from the auditor suggest that what we have done so far means we are well placed for these two standards in early 2014 as well."
Clear were also audited by Achilles in late November as part of our annual UVDB assessment (which Utility Companies often use as a pre-filter for new work) and we are pleased to confirm that our score across Quality, Environment and Health and Safety have all gone up and are now all over 90%.
Clear would like to thank everyone again for their help and commitment in achieving these fantastic results.
