Model Audits

Water Companies invest a significant amount of money in creating, updating and maintaining hydraulic models of their sewerage systems. These models are used to investigate the hydraulic performance of the sewerage networks, to develop outline solutions, to plan investment, and to design improvement schemes.

It is fundamentally important that the models are reliable, fit for their intended purpose and adequately documented. It is equally important that any model limitations are recognised and documented to allow model users to assess the sensitivity of their analyses and solutions.

Model audits provide a means to establish the confidence that can be placed in model predictions. Audits can also be used to identify additional works that may be required to improve a model, particularly in relation to known deficiencies or sewerage problems.

Clear’s specialist hydraulic modelling expertise is ideal for carrying out technical audits of models, assessing the fitness for purpose of models and advising on any limitations to model usage.

We have undertaken a large number of model audits on behalf of a number of UK Water Companies. These audits are frequently carried out to add confidence to the design of scheme solutions and to identify areas where improvements are required. Clear has been heavily involved in the audit programmes for Scottish Water and Severn Trent and has also undertaken model audits for Anglian Water. Clear has audited over 40 hydraulic models against a range of specifications and intended purposes for various water companies.

A key factor in our successful approach to model audits is the recognized experience and expertise of our senior and principal modellers.

We offer a flexible approach to model auditing to suit our Clients’ requirements. Relatively brief audits can be carried out to provide an overall sensibility assessment with sample checking. Alternatively, more detailed audits can be undertaken to fully cross-check modelled data and calculations against the Client’s specification. Clear also has experience in solution auditing, where the modelling of outline designs and the application of model parameters to this design are checked to add further confidence that all attempts have been made to ensure the correct, robust, most cost effective solution has been developed.
