Sustainable Drainage (SuDS)
Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) aim to mimic, as closely as possible, the natural drainage of a site to minimise the impact of surface water runoff from development. The use of SuDS techniques for the management of rainfall runoff on development sites leads to; a reduction in the pollution of rivers; a reduction in flooding risk; potential enhancement of landscape and ecological benefits. SuDS techniques can eliminate the problems associated with conventional drainage by utilising a range of design techniques that ensure runoff is collected, stored and cleaned prior to its controlled release to the environment.
The principle aim of SuDS is to minimise the impact of surface water runoff on the natural environment through flood control, pollution prevention and improved public amenity. Where SuDS techniques utilize vegetated features to treat pollution and manage runoff there is scope to provide enhanced landscaping and to provide additional wildlife habitats and increased biodiversity. Where soil conditions permit, the use of infiltration or partial infiltration drainage techniques minimizes the volumes of off-site runoff and also provides groundwater recharge.
Sustainable Drainage is advocated by the Environment Agency and SEPA and is increasingly required by Local Authorities in the planning process as a result of Planning Policy Statement 25 (PPS 25) - Development and Flood Risk. Through PPS25 and Building Regulations Approved Document H, there is an emphasis on the role of SuDS and a general presumption that they will be used.
Concept
Clear provides a comprehensive design and management consultancy comprising acknowledged experts in the field of Sustainable Drainage. A key aspect to our approach is the selection of the most appropriate and cost effective SuDS techniques to suit specific site constraints. Our aim is always to provide a system that manages water, pollution and flooding risks with reduced construction risks, reduced maintenance requirements and reduced overall costs.
Our design team can ensure that project-specific requirements are achieved through a combination of technical expertise, practical application of geotechnical engineering, drainage assessment and our long term commitment to ongoing research into the development of SuDS techniques.
Our specialist hydraulic modelling capability can be used to fully assesses drainage design and optimise the SuDS solutions for large and complex projects.
Expertise
Clear has a comprehensive track record of providing successful and cost effective SuDS solutions to public and private sector clients throughout the UK. Our SuDS team works hand-in-hand with our Flood Risk Assessment and Ecology teams to provide fully integrated solutions.
